Ankle sprains are common injuries in daily life, most often involving damage to the lateral ligaments of the ankle. When such an injury occurs, the RICE Principle is a classic and effective first-aid approach:
Rest:
Immediately cease movement and rest the injured area to prevent further damage.
Ice:
Apply a cold compress to the injured area to lower the temperature, reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, alleviate pain, and control swelling. Each session should last 10–20 minutes, performed at least three times a day. Do not place ice directly on the skin; wrap it in a towel to avoid frostbite. Ice application is effective only within the first 48 hours after the injury.
Compression:
Use an elastic bandage to wrap the injured ankle, applying moderate pressure to reduce swelling. Avoid excessive compression, as this could lead to swelling or impaired circulation in areas distal to the wrap.
Elevation:
Elevate the injured limb above heart level to enhance venous and lymphatic return, reduce swelling, and promote recovery.
